Can you guess?

what this is?

The answer is truly disgusting.
It's chicken.
It is mechanically separated chicken.
You could be served this at McDonald's...

Process: parts of chicken are put into the machine separating the bones from the meat. Theoretically. What actually happens is that ALL of the chicken, bones, eyes etc etc is crushed into tiny little pieces. Being infested by bacteria the mashed chicken is washed in ammonia, receiving this appealing colour. However, it doesn't taste like chicken anymore, it tastes of ammonia. But that is easily solved by artificial flavours. It also doesn't look like chicken so it is artifically coloured to get that delicious beige chickenly colour again...  If chicken nuggets still sound appealing to you I think you are barking mad!

Read all of it here!!

I was suprised to find that it is not illegal in Sweden. There are several farms that utilise this process called MSM... Check it out here : http://www.slv.se/sv/grupp2/livsmedelsforetag/sa_kontrolleras_din_verksamhet/Livsmedelsanlaggningar/EU-godkanda-anlaggningar/Sektion-5/
Couldn't find which farms McDonald's use unfortunately.

Recommendations

The recommendations from governments and WHO are pointing towards less red and processed meat and more vegetables. According to these recent articles:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-12571576
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-16561565
we are not eating enough fruit and vegetables. Furthermore, red and processed meat are becoming increasingly linked to different forms of cancer, especially bowel cancer...
Swedish researchers have recently linked processed meat to pancreatic cancer, but this find still needs more research.

I informed you thusly

A new report on the causes of cancer is published in The British Journal of Cancer. The research showed that diet and lifestyle had a significant role in the causes of cancer.
The lack of fruit and veg in the diet was the second most important factor for men after smoking! In women overweight is a major cause of certain cancers, which I believe also has to do with a lack of fruit and vegetables and an excess of processed foods such as sweets.

Yet another reason to eat more vegetables and cut down on meat!

Time to get serious people!

Ok guys, this isn't working anymore, it is time to take out the big guns; our voices. This is a very short video that explains all you need to know.
What you can do then...

  • most importantly: refuse to eat bluefin tuna. If you love sushi like I do, ask them to replace the tuna, and if you have the guts, tell them why you don't want to eat bluefin tuna and encourage them to stop serving it
  • inform everyone you know about the issue; knowledge is power and can do more than you think. Individually we can do a little, together we can do a lot (cheesy I know!)
  • write to the ICCAT (Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas) and CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species) and ask them firmly to take their responsibility in the protection of the oceans. It doesn't even take two minutes out of your time...
  • You can also write your embassies to push this harder
  • You can join movements such as Greenpeace, Howtosavetheblufin.com etc
If you have anymore ideas how to help please share it!

A steak for everyone?

On the swedish, svtplay.se, you can watch a documentary, similar to food inc but focused on the more parts of the world. Brasil is quickly becoming on the the largest exporter of meat. As the meat production increases the rainforest is decreasing to beome pasture. When the land is ruined it is cheaper to chop down more rainforest than to regrow the grounds...

Scientists are researching ways of cutting the impact on environment caused by cow's breathing of methane and pigs pooping fosfor. Methane is one the biggest contributors to global warming and fosfor is essential for all life and plants but in excess it causes too much plant growth, especially of algae which then makes the water cloudy and blocks the sunlight from entering into the water. The dead algae also takes a lot of oxygen to break down forcing animals to move from the area and lots of other biological bad processes go down. The UN resently published a research showing that meat production stands for 18% of the greenhouse gases.

A Belgian environmentalist introduced the campaign of one meat free day a week and the concept is constantly growing! Visit the UK website sponsored by Goodlife and start experimenting with vegetarian food. You'll be surprised by the opportunities!

7 Foods So Unsafe Even Farmers Won't Eat Them - Planet Green

Another article about chemicals in food, I don't think this applies to Sweden, at least I sure hope not!

7 Foods So Unsafe Even Farmers Won't Eat Them - Planet Green

Don't know how serious to take this, but it is rather shocking...

Recipe!

Oh my higher power, that was f*ing delicious! Took some time to make but not at all complicated and perfect for students.
Yummy!

Recipe:
50 g yeast
125 ml milk
175 ml mashed potato
250 ml flour
Salt, sugar and peppar
A spice, we used thyme

  1. Mix yeast, milk, a pinch of salt and sugar. Leave for 10 min or until a bit of foam has been created.
  2. Mix all ingredients in a bowl to a smooth dough, pour it unto a floury surfice and knead for about 5-10 min.
  3. Put the dough in a big lightly oiled bowl and let it grow for 1-1,5 hours. Perfect study time!
  4. When time is up, knead a little more before baking it out on a baking plate, about 1,5 cm thick.
  5. Put whatever you want on it!
  6. Stick it in the middle of the owen on 200 c for 25 min (we did 30) and bon appétit!
So worth the wait!
Ok, going to wake Fynn up!

Potato pizza

Outfit of the day! Due to the rain you do not want to see how I looked after cycling to the train station in pissing rain... Hair was already wet from washing, so wasn't too bad, but still; not happy!
Colours aren't being done justice to, but what you are seeing
is a chiffongy dress from Bikbok and my new
favourite knitted cardigan from Åhlens...
I finally got my act together and applied for rental allowance! Not that difficult, but as a student so worth it! Hope I get a quick reply with some monies rolling in....
So good to finally have it done!
Go on money, you know you want to be spent by me!
Met up Fynn, who'll be here for 2,5 weeks, maybe we'll get to find out what a "normal" relationship is like...?
We went food shopping and spent a staggering amount of 750 SEK and that was after a 10% discount check that I had. Malmö is so nice, I've gotten so many discount checks and offers in the mail that I thought I'd died and gone to discount heaven! We bought food for the entire week and hopefully even longer. Loads of basic stuff like flour to bake bread etc. Tonight we've mde a potatopizza with union, sundried tomato and feta cheese. Haven't tasted it yet but if successful will post the recipe!
My man baking away... Don't for a second think
that just because I'm of the female gender this is my job.
No no, in Sweden we work with equality so all you men;
get some flour on those hands and start kneading!
Food time!
